Have you ever wanted to drain the Mediterranean and investigate all the ancient shipwrecks lying about? Fortunately, robotic technologies have enabled access to this untouched museum of nautical treasures. Luther professor Dan Davis and his colleague Robert Ballard (the renowned explorer and discoverer of the Titanic) are among a handful of scholars who have discovered ancient shipwrecks in the deep waters of this region. In this talk, Davis will share the story of their adventure and the discoveries they made. Dan Davis is a marine archaeologist and head of the department of Classics at Luther College. He specializes in ancient maritime trade, ship construction, and deep-water archaeology. A native of Des Moines and a veteran of the U.S. Navy, he earned a bachelor’s from the University of Iowa, a master’s from Texas A&M, and a Ph D from the University of Texas at Austin.
