Oelwein Public Library Board Minutes July 6, 2009

The Oelwein Public Library Board of Trustees held its regular board meeting on Monday, July 6, 2009 at 6:15 p.m. at the library.

Present: Leo, Peik, Gilson, Ridihalgh, Pixler, Kerns, and Macken
Absent: None

The agenda was approved.
The minutes were approved as written.
A note was read from the library staff thanking the board for providing an appreciation breakfast at the last staff meeting.

Friends’ Report – The Friends’ will be busy helping with the upcoming Visions programs.
Director’s Report
•    Ashley Zech has been hired as a new page. Her training will start July 21.
•    Susie Ricchio earned her library certification and will receive a .25 pay increase.
•    Visions Grand Opening will be Tuesday, July 7. Leo will give introductions, Mayor Murphy will proclaim “Astronomy Month”, and the Grout Museum will have their STARLAB planetarium for the featured program.
•    End of the year statistics and budgets were reviewed. 47,029 people attended the library and 56,835 items were checked out. These numbers are higher than the previous year.
July bills were reviewed. Peik made a motion to approve the bills. Seconded by Pixler. Motion carried.

Peik made a motion to purchase the Apollo circulation system to be installed September 1. Seconded by Gilson. Motion carried.

Officer positions rotated for the new year. Ridihalgh is President. Pixler is Vice-President. Ridihalgh moved to have the position of Secretary filled by Gilson. Seconded by Peik. Motion carried. These positions are for a two year term.

The board is in favor of signing a contract with the State Library for the First Search databases. The databases used by the library can be used at no charge to the library.

The city finance committee will make a recommendation to the city council to grant $10,000 of the Hotel/Motel Tax for the outdoor messaging board. The council will decide July 13.
