Oelwein Public Library Board Minutes March 12, 2009

The Oelwein Public Library Board of Trustees held its regular board meeting on Thursday, March 12, 2009 at 6:15 p.m. at the library.

Present: Leo, Peik, Ridihalgh, Gilson, Kerns, and Macken
Absent: Pixler

The Agenda was approved.
The minutes were approved as written.
Correspondences: none

Friends Report: The Friends approved purchasing an outdoor shed for the approximate cost of $2115.00 which includes a cement pad. The high school shop class will build the shed.

Director’s Report:
•    The library did not receive the ICMA/Gates Grant for an outside messaging board.
•    The new Trustee Handbooks were distributed to board members.
•    Macken attended a class of Open Meetings Law. The board reviewed the Open Meetings Law test answers.
Peik moved to accept the February bills. Seconded by Gilson. Approved.

The board recommended names for the initial Library Foundation board. Macken and Leo will inquire if these people are interested in serving on the board.

The board discussed the FY 2009-2010 library budget of $200,000. Peik moved to give the library staff a 4% pay raise making up the difference of approximately $2,850 from the book budget. Seconded by Ridihalgh. Extra hours will be reduced from 339 to 10. Motion carried.

Final plans for the outdoor shed were made. The shed will be placed on the east side of the library north of the green electrical boxes. A beige siding and door was chosen. The door will face the south. Shingles will match those on the library. A cement pad with apron will be poured. Peik will call Suckow Construction for an estimate.

Discussion was held on the ASVAB Study Guide policy. Gilson made a motion to accept the policy with the recommended changes. Seconded by Peik. GED Study Guides will not be added to the policy. Motion carried.

The board inspected the children’s table made by Wood Works by the Lake. As the color does not match the chairs, Macken will ask for it to be refinished.
