Oelwein Public Library Board Minutes January 10, 2017

The Oelwein Public Library Board of Trustees held its regular board meeting on Tuesday, January 10, 2017 at 5:30 p.m. at the library.

Present: Kerns, Gilson, Berryman, Mars, Ingersoll, and Macken

Absent: Christensen

President Berryman called the meeting to order.

Mars made a motion to approve the agenda and the minutes. Seconded by Gilson. Motion carried.

No correspondences.

For Trustee Training, the Board reviewed the number of required standards needed to be achieved at each tier level for library accreditation. The Oelwein Public Library is accredited through June of 2020.


Director’s Report:

  • Katherine Schuelke earned her library certification. Since she earned her certification, she will receive an additional increase of $.25 to her hourly wage in July.
  • The library has been approved to be a Passport Acceptance Facility. The library will keep $25 per application for providing this service. Macken will check into the requirements for offering the option of taking the photograph for the application.
  • In January, Kim Van Deest will be teaching a class on Windows 10 and on Tablets and Ebooks.

Friend’s Report:

  • The Chocolate Fest will be February 10 from 6-8.


Bills were reviewed. Gilson made a motion to accept the bills. Seconded by Mars. Motion carried.


Cedar Valley Seamless did not show up at the meeting to discuss the gutter repairs.


Ingersoll and Kerns received no response from Andrew Miller on the attic insulation.


Discussion was held on the Safe Patron Policy in regards to expectations of the library, the parents and guardians, and the police department on the occasion when persons who would require supervision are left at the library after the library has closed for the day. This policy will be discussed further at the February library board meeting.
