Paper Quilling Snowflake Thursday, October 1st at 1:30 p.m.
Join us Thursday, October 1 at 1:30 to make your own paper quilled snowflake. Emily from Emily's Papercrafts will teach the art of quilling, making designs from curled strips of paper. All supplies will be provided. This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Library.
Iowa Scenic Views By Foot with Tyler Sullivan Tuesday, October 13th at 6:00 p.m.
Did you know that Iowa has 99 counties and 101 courthouses?
Tyler Sullivan has been to 98 out of the 99 counties, and over 1,000 cities across the state. He runs at least a mile in each community and forms a poem for each of the counties he visits. In 2024 he traveled to over 150 museums across the state, and in 2025 he saw and astonishing 366 attractions. Come on the 13th at 6:00 p.m. and listen to his adventures from across Iowa. This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Oelwein Library.

Hospice care is for more than your final days. Join Annika Wall of Cedar Valley Hospice as we discuss the truth about hospice, the support it provides both the patient and family and the reason why patients and families say “I wish we had called sooner.”
Hosted by the Oelwein Public Library | Education Provided by Cedar Valley Hospice – the area’s only 5-star hospice.

Paranormal Investigators: Heartland Truth Seekers Tuesday, October 20th at 6:00 p.m.
Enjoy a haunting evening at the library with Heartland Truth Seekers.
Heartland Truth Seekers is a paranormal investigation group that began conducting investigations in 2001, driven by a passion for exploring the unknown and seeking answers to the unexplained. For more that two decades this group has investigated reported haunted locations across the U.S. documenting evidence and finding answers to the question: Is there life after death? Heartland Truth Seekers approaches each investigation with an open mind and a respect for the location while keeping the experience fun. The group loves to share past experiences with others curious about the paranormal.

October is Dyslexia Awareness Month.Dyslexia affects up to 20% of the population, both children and adults. We have items in our collection that can
be of assistance to struggling readers. The Libby app has audiobooks and the option to change ebooks to a dyslexia-friendly font. We have VOX Books that read the story out loud while you follow along. We also have dyslexia-friendly books labeled with a purple star in the children's department.Ask a librarian for more information on any of these resources.

Banned Books Week:
Banned Books Week is an initiative started to highlight the issue of banned and challenged books across the country. Challenges to the freedom to readhave increased in recent years, including through state and federal legislation. Banned Books Week takes place October 4th-10th. Be on the lookout for displays throughout the library this month. Practice your freedom to read and read a banned book!
