Pages & Play Club
The Oelwein Public Library offers a weekly Pages & Play Club for 3-5 year olds with Miss Katie on each Wednesday at 10:00 am. This event meets in the library's meeting room. Contact Katie by email at kschuelke@oelwein.lib.ia.us or by calling the library at 319-283-1515 with any questions.
We will read a story and share fun activities.
Theme Thursdays
This is an after school program every Thursday from 4:00 - 5:00 p.m.
Theme Thursdays is intended for elementary and secondary children. Each week will be different theme and activity. Lego Club will feature the 2nd Thursday of the month.
Summer Reading Program is offered every year in June.

Upcoming classes offered by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach
Around the World: Flight To End Polio
Monday, April 22nd at 5:00 p.m.
In collaboration with the Oelwein Rotary Club, the library will host cousins Peter Teahen and John
Ockenfels, who piloted a single piston-engine airplane around the world to raise awareness and money for Rotary’s End Polio Now program. The flight took 90-days, made 37 landings in 19 countries, and involved 24 fundraisers. Only 702 pilots in history have ever achieved this feat, and less than 270 are alive today! Both Peter and John are longtime Rotarians and
members of the International Fellowship of Flying Rotarians.
Peter and John will share their powerful story of: “Around the World: Flight To End Polio”.

Sheriff Tony Thompson
Monday, May 20th at 6:00 p.m.
Sheriff Thompson will discuss his new book, Anyplace But Here, and the convergence between mental illness and the criminal justice system. He will sign books for attendees. Anyplace But Here is the selection for Oelwein Reads Book Club for May. The Book Club will meet at the library for the program.

Sheriff Thompson's career with the Black Hawk County Sheriff's Office began in March of 1994 and he has worked in the Jail, Special Services and Patrol Divisions. His prior assignments include: Drug Education Officer, Community Services Coordinator, Computer Crimes Investigator, Patrol Officer, Public Information Officer, and SWAT Team leader prior to taking command of the Black Hawk County Sheriff's Office in 2009. Sheriff Thompson is known statewide for his mental health advocacy and diversion efforts from the criminal justice system. He served on the Complex Mental Health Needs Subcommittee for the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services and helped frame the mental health redesign legislation in 2012. He has also served on the state’s Public Safety Advisory Board, Iowa’s Criminal and Juvenile Justice Planning Advisory Council. He is the immediate past state president of the Iowa State Sheriffs’ and Deputies’ Association and continues to serve on several local boards, committees and councils, including the steering committee for their own county Crisis Stabilization and Access Center.
