Scattergood Hostel
Wednesday, June 5th at 5:00 p.m.

Michael Luick-Thrams event.jpg

This program tells the inspiring story of Scattergood Hostel, near West Branch, Iowa. From April 1939 to March 1943, 185 refugees from Nazi-occupied Europe found safety and support there. With the help of Quaker farmers and idealistic college students, the refugees - referred to by their hosts as "guests" - sought to overcome their traumas, find their place in the new world, and build new lives.
A related video explores the history of Quaker involvement in social issues, including their support for abolitionism and prison reform. It highlights the Quaker commitment to peaceful principles and their efforts to create a refuge for those affected by Nazi persecution. The documentary sheds light on the challenges faced by refugees during that time, including the search for employment and assimilation into American society.
Through interviews with descendants of the refugees and archival footage, the documentary showcases the impact of Scattergood in providing a supportive community and helping refugees regain their confidence. It also highlights the role of dedicated staff members and volunteers who worked tirelessly to create a nurturing environment for the guests.
The story of Scattergood is a testament to the power of compassion, resilience, and the belief in creating a better world for all. Join us on this journey to discover the remarkable history of Scattergood and the lives it touched.
